Mission Statement
To present chamber music of the highest quality performed by internationally and nationally recognized ensembles to tri-state residents; to support and extend the full range of chamber music repertoire through performances and commissions; to support educational activities that encourage more adults and students to appreciate the art form; and to nurture exceptional emerging chamber music ensembles.
History
The Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society was founded in 1961 by a group of civic leaders, including such distinguished individuals as Mrs. Paul G. Benedum, Henry J. Heinz II, Mrs. Lincoln Maazel and Maestro William Steinberg, who wanted local audiences to hear the world’s finest chamber music artists perform in Pittsburgh.
Since then, PCMS has presented an annual concert series featuring the most celebrated ensembles of our time (like the Budapest, Juilliard, Guarneri, Tokyo, Emerson and Cleveland Quartets, the Beaux Arts Trio and Pablo Casals Trio, to name a few). Currently, PCMS complements its annual concert series with educational programs for young people and adults.
The PCMS audience is one of the nation’s largest for chamber music, and the organization is noted throughout the country for its long-standing commitment to excellence, its innovative programming and its high level of community support.
